The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced that the land on which Weston Hotel in Lang'ata, Nairobi owned by Deputy President William Ruto sits will be repossessed.
KCAA Executive Director Gilbert Kibe disclosed that the piece of land is among hundreds of parcels that they are looking to reclaim.
“All I can tell you is that we are trying our best to repossess our land. We are in court with several cases and the rest is with National Lands Commission.
"Yes, Weston Hotel is part of the land but the case is with NLC,” he told The Star.
Kibe spoke in response to economist and political strategist David Ndii who challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta to demolish the hotel as it sits on public land before "turning himself in".
"(Uhuru), this is public land. One more friend you need to lose. And once you are done with him, turn yourself in,” he tweeted.
The hotel which Ruto admitted to owning in a past TV interview sits on public land and the plot transfer was done against the advice of senior government officials including Francis Muthaura .
In 2001, then Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communication wrote to Lands PS Nehemiah Ng'eno seeking to have a title deed issued for the plot in favour of the Directorate of Civil aviation, noting that it was attracting private developers.
“In order to safeguard ownership of the government plot, which seems to attract the attention of property developers, I request that your office issue a title in favour of DCA,” he wrote, in letter Ref No MTC/CONF/6.111/(55).
Despite his advice, however, the land was allocated to Priority Limited which is associated with the Deputy President on August 30, 2002, when Ruto was Minister for Home Affairs.
This was months before the election where Mwai Kibaki 's NARC toppled the KANU regime.
